This young girl was kidnapped from her home at the age of thirteen. She was forced into child marriage, and was pregnant by the time she was fifteen. Being so young, her labor had many complications and she developed obstetric fistula. Her husband abandoned her, and she is now seeking treatment at the government hospital in Migori. We were able to visit her in the hospital, where she had been reunited with her mother after two years.

Last Week in Kenya!

We are off today for the last leg of our trip. Leaving Eldoret for Migori, where we will be taking a repaired Fistula patient home. Taylor and I will be documenting her journey back as a fully repaired woman. After Migori the two of us will travel to Maasai Mara for some Safari time! It will be a great way to end the trip, and I look forward to some wildlife photography in Africa!

This is a photo of Joy and I at Gynocare. I had the opportunity to photograph an actual Fistula surgery last Sunday, and Joy was the patient. The entire bottom half of her body was numb, so she was awake during her operation. Being the first time I had ever seen a surgery, and it took longer than expected because of a few complications,  there were certain moments I got a little light headed. Each time this would happen I would take a break and stand by Joy. She and I would smile at each other, and she would rub my arm for a few minutes at a time. I think we both helped one another feel more at ease.
When I came back from our six day trip in the field I made sure to check up on her, and she is doing much better. She requested this photo, and will be taking a print home with her in the next week!

Magdalena had Fistula for over 30 years. She is Sylvia’s neighbor, and was also repaired at Gynocare thanks to One by One.

This is Sylvia. She had Fistula for 51 years. One by One took her to be repaired last February when the organization was visiting Kenya. We were lucky enough to visit her at her home outside of Migori. Her entire family welcomed us, and even though this was the first time I met her, it was like visiting an old friend.

I gave the women at Gynocare printed portraits of themselves. Not one woman had ever received a print of themselves to keep. Everyone started dancing and singing. It was one of the most amazing moments of my life. I feel so lucky to be here right now, and I don’t think I have ever loved being a photographer more. What an incredible job I have!

These are some quick photos from West Pokot, a very rural part of Kenya. We worked with a school, and went to a few villages taking to women who have been victims of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation). A very intense trip, but it was absolutely incredible.
